Website Design : Simon PotterSussex Mills Group promotes the study and the restoration of mills and associated artifacts within the counties of East and West Sussex in the United Kingdom.

Many of our Members are actively involved in the restoration and maintenance of Sussex mills. We also organise occasional working parties, when Members get together for specific projects, such as clearing out a mill pond, painting weatherboarding, assisting with the fitting or removal of a windmill's sweeps, or just tidying up in advance of an open day. Details of these working parties will appear on our Events page.

Our Mills Open page gives details of those Sussex mills open to visitors.

On National Mills Weekend many windmills and watermills throughout the country and across Europe open their doors to visitors. Some mills are only open on this one weekend. Special events are held at many of the mills.

Sussex Mills Group organises visits to mills across Sussex and neighbouring counties.

Sussex Mills Group is pleased to welcome new members, whose subscription will include membership of our parent body Sussex Industrial Archaeology Society.   Please click here for Membership information.

Sussex Mills Group publishes four newsletters each year. Our parent body Sussex Industrial Archaeology Society also publishes newsletters, its Sussex Industrial History journal and sells a number of other publications and films.

Research carried out by our Members has included a detailed investigation of an early mill site discovered in an Eastbourne wood, a dendrochronology test on the centre post of Nutley Windmill and enquiries concerning the highly acclaimed “Optical Mathematical Scientific and Surveying Equipment” makers W F Stanley, whose catalogue of c.1890 listed a millstone measure.

A Society Member has retyped The Miller's Guide [being a set of Practical Rules as adopted by some of the best millers] from the original, including the punctuation and phrasing.

The traditional Windmills and watermills of Sussex present ideal venues for students of all ages to study at first hand many aspects of the National Curriculum and provide numerous educational opportunities.
