The earliest known mills in Brighton are depicted in a coloured drawing of the French attacking the town. The drawing is dated 1545, but probably based on the events of 1514 when the invaders landed and burnt down every dwelling.
This publication covers the early windmills, windmills near the sea, windmills near Dyke Road, east Brighton mills, north Brighton mills and the steam flour mills.

This book is compiled from material about the windmills of Sussex collected by the late Maurice Lawson Finch over some fifty years, to which he added every picture postcard showing a windmill that he could find. He was a most assiduous collector of information and there can be few references to mills in newspapers, magazines and estate agents' property sales details that escaped his eagle eye from the end of the Second World War until his death in April 2000 at the age of seventy five. |
|
Maurice worked initially from maps dating from 1579 to the 1900s and he recorded all relevant information in respect of every mill there had been on the sites on the forms he designed for the purpose.
With each form he filed photocopies of all published references he obtained in respect of each mill together with all correspondence relating to her; often his own site plan, photographs, postcards and engravings. The material covering the mills of East Sussex filled seven box files, and he amassed almost the same amount of material about the mills of West Sussex.
At the beginning of the 19th century nearly every town and village had one or more windmills to grind corn. Today only a very few remain and can be visited and perhaps even seen working. However the sites are still there - some with the remains of the windmills that stood on them converted to country houses, some in process of restoration, some offering just foundation marks in the soil and a wonderful view.
This book, which is packed with pictures of East Sussex mill sites then and now, lists them in alphabetical order with map references. It also details the fires, storms and odd & unusual things that happened to the individual mills and their owners.

From early beginnings in the 1930s Frank Gregory explored the more local mills on his push bike, making sketches and completing them at home. At weekends the Gregory family visited the more distant highways and byways of Sussex by car and young Frank always took along sketching equipment.

 |
During the period of Frank's watermill survey, many were still turning and earning an honest living, but those mills that had become idle were being allowed to decay. Frank kept records of the state of each mill and helped wherever possible by encouraging and involving himself in restoration work. He was a regular visitor to many mills while they were still working, and knew the millers personally.
Frank was a recognised authority not only on Sussex but at national and international levels.
This presentation is a tribute to Frank, who was dedicated to the well being of Sussex mills for more than 60 years.
