Park Mill, Batemans
Situated at the bottom of the garden of Rudyard Kipling's former
home, this watermill has been restored to working order by SIAS
volunteers. Alongside can be seen an early water-driven turbine,
installed to generate electricity for the house.
Location : From Heathfield, take the A265 east for 6 miles. After
passing through Burwash Weald, turn right to Batemans.
Open : daily except Thursdays and Fridays, from Easter until the
end of October, 11am to 5pm. Entry by admission to Batemans.

Burton Watermill
Built circa 1784 on the site of a former ironworks. Powered by
a water turbine, installed in the 1920's. Delightful location,
adjacent to hammer pond.
Refreshment tearoom. Nature trails.
Location : From A285, 2 miles south of Petworth, turn east to
Burton Pond and Sutton. The mill car park, with limited space,
is by pond after 1 mile.
Open : National Mills Weekend and some Saturdays and Sundays in
summer. Restricted wheelchair access.

Chailey Windmill
A white smock mill, which has stood on this site (said to be
the centre of Sussex) since 1864, having previously spent 34
years on two other sites.
Although now devoid of most of her
machinery, the mill houses a rural life museum.
Location : From the A272/A275 North Chailey crossroads, take A272
west for 400 yards. The mill is up a turning on right.
Open : National Mills Sunday and the last Sunday
in each month from April to September inclusive, 3pm to 5pm. Entry
by admission charge. Parties and Bank Holidays by arrangement. Wheelchair access to site only.

Coultershaw Beam Pump
A waterwheel driven beam pump, installed in 1782 to supply water
for nearby Petworth House and town.
A rescued barn has been erected over the pump, which has been
restored by SIAS members.
Location : 1½ miles south of Petworth on the A285 to Chichester.
Open : National Mills Sunday and the 1st
& 3rd Sunday of each month from April to September and Bank
Holiday Mondays, 10.30am to 5pm or dusk, and by appointment.
Admission charge. Wheelchair access to ground floor only.

Halnaker Windmill
A tile hung brick tower mill, built in 1750 for Goodwood Estates.
Although externally complete, she is only a shell without floors
or machinery. Major renovations carried out in 2004.
Splendid walks across open fields with views of
Chichester and the coast.
Location : North east of Chichester
on the A286 to Midhurst, then by public footpath from Halnaker
village.
Open : all year. No admission charge

High Salvington Windmill
A black post mill, built before 1750 and ceasing work by 1900.
Restored to full working order and grinding flor.
There is a restored granary and a shop.
Refreshments are available.
Location :
From Worthing take the A27 west, turn right to High
Salvington, and the mill is adjacent to the road after ¾
mile.
Open :
National Mills Sunday and the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each
month April to September, 2.30pm to 5pm. Entry by admission charge. Parties by arrangement.
Wheelchair access to the site and shop only.

Ifield Watermill
There has been a corn mill here since 1684. It was rebuilt in
1817 and is now being restored. Working waterwheel and impressive
millpond. Local history display.
Location : From the A23, Crawley by-pass, turn off to Gossops Green and take the 2nd on the right, right again, 1st left, and turn
left at T junction. The mill is 400 yards on the left in Hyde Drive.
Open : on National Mills Weekend and the last Sunday in each month
from May until September, 2.30pm to 5pm. Entry by donation.
Some disabled and wheelchair access.
Groups welcome at other times by arrangement.

Jill Windmill
Situated above the village
of Clayton, adjacent to 'Jack' (a tower mill that is not open to visitors).
Restored to working order and grinds flour occasionally.
Location : From the A23 at Pyecombe take the A273 north. The mill is signposted right after ¾ mile [Mill Lane].
Open : the Saturday and Sunday of National Mills Weekend and Sundays from May
to September, 2pm to 5pm.
Entry by donation. Wheelchair access to site and roundhouse. Teas available.

Lowfield Heath Windmill
A mid-18th century post mill, moved to a new site in 1987-89.
Although a Surrey mill, she spent 13 years in Sussex due to boundary
changes! She last worked by wind in 1880 and is now being restored
to working order.
Location : From A23/A217 roundabout, north of Gatwick Airport, take the
road to Charlwood and follow the sign to Rusper. The mill is on the right after ½ mile.
Open : 2 pm to 5 pm on the last Sunday of each month from May to August, National Mills Sunday, and National Heritage Sunday, or by appointment.
Wheelchair access to the site only.

Lurgashall Watermill
Originally built at Lurgashall in the 17th century. Now one of
over 45 historic buildings at Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.
The mill is one of the few water-powered flour mills which can
be seen working daily.
Location : At southern end of Singleton village on the A286 Chichester
to Midhurst road, entrance via the museum.
Open : daily from March to October 10.30am to 6pm; and Wednesdays, Saturdays and
Sundays during November to February, 10.30am to 4pm or dusk. Entry
by admission charge to the museum.

Michelham Priory Watermill
Situated within the grounds of a 13th century moated priory. In 1896 an
iron waterwheel was added. The machinery was removed in 1924, but in 1997 this mill underwent major restoration including a new cast iron waterwheel.
Location : Signposted (Heritage Signs) from the A27 at Alfriston,
and the A22 at Arlington, Lower Dicker, and Golden Cross.
Open : 1st March to 31st October on Tuesday to Sunday (Closed Sundays). Open Bank Holidays and every day in August. The Priory and grounds open at 10.20am and close during March and October at 4.30pm, April, July and September at 5pm, August at 5.30pm.
The mill is
normally open from 2pm.
Entry by admission charge to the Priory and grounds, which includes the mill. Wheelchair access to the grounds and ground floor only.

Nutley Windmill
An open trestle post mill and the oldest working windmill in
Sussex, parts date from 16th century, although only having been on this site since 1830. She still grinds occasionally.
Location : From the A22 at the north end of Nutley, take the Crowborough
road east for 1 mile to a car park on the left. The mill is a
400yd walk from the car park.
Open : National Mills Sunday and the last Sunday in each month
from March to September, 2.30 to 5.30pm. Entry free.
The mill is also open most Wednesdays throughout the year from 11am to 4pm or dusk, whichever is the sooner. Wheelchair access to the site only.

Oldland Windmill
A post mill, first known on a map dated 1783 and
in operation until 1912.
Restoration to full working order has reached a significant stage. The sweeps were reinstated in 2007. Much of the machinery has survived.
Location : To the east of Keymer. No car parking on site. Approachable
only by foot from either Keymer or from Ditchling.
Open : National Mills Sunday and limited open days throughout the summer. See website for details.

Polegate Windmill
A brick tower mill with original machinery, restored in 1967.
Three working oat crushers, adjacent milling museum, refreshment
area, education room and toilets.
Location : West of A22 at Park Croft, Polegate, 4 miles north
of Eastbourne and 10 minutes walk from Polegate Railway Station.
Open : 2pm to 5pm Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter to the end of October, and on Wednesdays in August.
Comprehensive Wheelchair-accessible Museum adjoins the mill.
Special Events : Diary of events at Polegate Windmill and at other Sussex mills.

Rottingdean Windmill
This black smock mill, maintained by The Rottingdean Preservation Society, known as "Beacon Mill", was erected on a single-storey brick base at the present site in 1802.
The last miller, Mr George Nicholls, finished work here in the early 1880s
and by 1890 Beacon Mill was regarded so disheveled as to require immediate
demolition. Fortunately this was delayed and emergency measures taken.
In 1905-1906 the Marquis of Abergavenny, on whose land she stood, had
the mill renovated.
Further repairs were carried out in 1935, 1960, 1975 and again in recent years.
Little of the original milling machinery now remains.
The first and ground floors are open to the public and interpretation information is available.
Location : Situated on Beacon Hill, adjacent to the A259 Coast Road, west of the City of Brighton & Hove.
Open : 2pm to 4.30pm on the Saturday and Sunday of National Mills Weekend and on the third Sunday of each month from May to September. Car parking in the village. Wheelchair access to ground floor and grounds only. Entry free, donations welcome.

Shipley Windmill
The only working smock mill in Sussex, built in 1879. The mill
once belonged to the poet, Hilaire Belloc, and has been restored
in his memory.
Teas are available from the village hall nearby.
Location : From the A24/A272 crossroads (traffic lights) take
the A272 west, after approx. 1 mile turn left and follow the
signs to Shipley village.
Open : National Mills Sunday and on the first, second and third Sundays of each month from April to October inclusive. Also open on Bank Holiday Mondays and on their accompanying Sunday.
Opening times are 2 pm to 5 pm. Parties by appointment.
Entry by admission charge. Limited wheelchair access to shop, ground floor and mill site.

Stone Cross Windmill
Sussex Mills Group and Wealden District Council safeguarded the future of this windmill by the formation in 1995 of the Stone Cross Mill Trust.
This white tower mill, owned by the Stone Cross Mill Trust, has been restored to working order and now grinds regularly.
The mill, originally known as Blackness Mill, dates from 1876, and worked until 1937. She is reckoned to be the most highly developed tower windmill in this country.
Location : From the A22/A27 junction north of Polegate, take the A27 east, turn right after two miles (signposted Stone Cross / Westham / Eastbourne).
The mill is ¾ mile on the right, past the crossroads. Public access to the mill is via Beggars Lane. Wheelchair access to ground floor.
Open :
The exterior is available to view anytime. The mill will be open during the summer on Sundays 2pm to 5pm or by prior arrangement. Whilst there is no car parking at the mill, there are spaces in the adjoining roads. Entry free.

West Blatchington Windmill
An unusual smock mill , built on a barn complex in 1820 and ceasing
work around 1900. The original machinery remains as the heart
of a fascinating museum of milling, displaying many items rescued
from other Sussex mills.
Location : From A27/A2038 junction on the Brighton by-pass, take
A2038 for approx. ¾ mile and turn left at the traffic lights.
The mill is in Holmes Avenue.
Open : National Mills Sunday, Sundays and Bank Holidays from May
to September, 2.30pm to 5pm. Entry by admission charge. Wheelchair access to ground floor.

Windmill Hill Windmill
Situated in 1066 country, the second tallest and largest Post Mill in body size. Dating from 1815, the mill last worked by wind in 1894.
Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the European Union and the European Agricultural and Guidance and Guarantee Fund for the provision of the interpretation centre.
Location : On the A271 between Herstmonceux and Boreham Street.
Open to the public on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month and Bank Holidays : 2.30 - 5 00 pm Easter to October. School parties and other groups can visit throughout the year by appointment.

Sussex Windmills DVD
The first record of a windmill in Sussex was at Amberley in 1185. As the population increased, so did the demand for flour, and over the next seven centuries many hundreds were built within the county, the last being Patcham Waterhall Mill in 1884/5.
Mills which burned down or suffered other disasters were replaced as necessary. Today only the remains of eighty can still be found, and of these just a few have been restored to their former glory.
This DVD is a tribute to those volunteers who have devoted countless hours to the restoration, preservation and maintenance of these magnificent monuments to our industrial heritage.
The work is ongoing and never complete. We hope that this DVD will encourage viewers to go out and discover for themselves the wonderful technology of these splendid buildings.
This DVD, with a running time of approximately 25 minutes, produced by Martyn Taylor and narrated by Jenny Pickering, includes Jill, Polegate, High Salvington, West Blatchington, Nutley, Stone Cross, Barnham, Shipley, Oldland, Halnaker, Lowfield Heath, Argos Hill and Chailey windmills. Also included are interviews with Jim Woodward-Nutt and with miller's daughter Bertha Terry, as well as a sequence showing grinding at Shipley Windmill.

When you visit the participating Sussex mills you will have your passport stamped.
When you have collected stamps from twelve mills you will be able to send off for a limited edition SILVER coloured Dusty Miller Badge.
As you go around the mills, you will learn about these extremely interesting buildings and how they were used to produce flour, and, at one of them, how it pumped water to supply a country house.
